SportMed Run/Walk Programs
Honour Your Health Challenge
SportMed RunWalk programs are now reaching aboriginal communities across the province thanks to a new partnership between SportMedBC and Act Now's Honour Your Health Challenge (HYHC). HYHC is a community-based program that brings together best practices in health and the best Aboriginal traditions to promote the health and well-being of Aboriginal people. Initial goals to prevent and stop tobacco misuse have been expanded to include strategies to increase physical activity among participants and their families.
The HYHC set its sights on The Vancouver Sun Run and in 2007 over 350 people took part in the inaugural program. Two pilot clinics were offered in Vancouver and Penticton and the remaining participants joined members in their communities and trained on their own using SportMedBC's online support.
In 2008, the HYHC corporate team broke all Sun Run records by registering a whopping 1325 participants - the largest team in the event! There were 9 clinics (185 particpants and 49 leaders) and over 950 participants training with online support from SportMedBC.
In 2009, the HYHC Sun Run InTraining program grew even more, leading to a switch to SportMed online training and support, rather than clinic based programs. Overall, 2299 participants registered for the InTraining program, with 102 group leaders overseeing the training of their local communities. The HYHC team was the largest Corporate Team in the 2009 Vancouver Sun Run - with over 1967 participants. They won 2nd place overall in the Corporate division - Congratulations to all!
